Hayfever

Introduction
At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century, Hayfever was first recognised by a physician who described his own symptoms. He called it seasonal catarrh (catarrh aestivus). The condition was so uncommon pre-industrial revolution that it took him nearly ten years to identify a handful of other sufferers. Now it is twice as common in towns as it is in the country, mainly due to vehicle pollution and the effect of sunlight on it (petrochemical smog as it is known). It now affects 20? of the population with the peak age of twenty years for contracting this.

It is estimated that Chronic Rhinitis affects 1 person in 6. Itching of the nose suggests allergy. Non-infectious, non-allergic rhinitis can be diagnosed by exclusion, and usually there are food allergic components in that condition. Rhinitis can be provoked in some people by oral contraceptives, aspirin, pain-killing drugs (the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), or the dye tartrazine.

Before you start
The gut’s ability to absorb nutrients, whether it is from food or from the food state supplements, will be significantly improved if the body has first been cleansed of harmful toxins, and the intestinal tract replenished with healthy flora.

It is of particular benefit in today’s environment with our increased exposure to harmful toxins from so many sources. It is our recommendation to pre-empt any dietary/nutritional program with a cleanse, and to repeat it twice per year.

To this extent we recommend that before you start on your required formula you undertake our Detox Formula which involves 3 products that provide a very effective cleanse program that will enhance your health and wellbeing.

Additional Comment
It is important that attention is paid to the balance between acid-forming and alkali-forming foods. The optimum balance is around 60% alkali-forming to acid-forming. See Acid Forming and Alkali Forming guidelines.

Pollution – photochemical reaction caused by sunlight, which releases ozone from sulphur and nitrogen dioxides. Nitrogen oxide, released from vehicle exhausts can damage the sensitive lining of the nose at levels of 0.4 to 2.0 parts per million making sufferers more vulnerable to attack.

Weather Sunny, bright weather (as a result of the photochemical effects) causes most problems but others also suffer at the onset of wet, rainy weather causing starch granules, which are tightly packed within pollen grains, to explode on contact with water, with each grain releasing approximately 700 granules of starch. There is also an increase of mould spores released during rain and thunderstorms.

Hayfever can occur at any time from February to September depending on which pollen(s) are responsible. The commonest problem is with grass and these pollens are produced from April through to September.
